Tribal Censuses: How Native Nations are Counting Citizens and Communities?

In the past five years has your tribe conducted a comprehensive tribal survey of tribal citizens or community (not the US Census) to create population, demographic, and/or socioeconomic members information for decision-making?

Tribes are starting to conduct their own comprehensive surveys of tribal citizens or community members in order to create data for decision-making. However, very little information has been gathered about the methods tribes are using and the questions being asked. The Native Nations Institute’s (NNI) “Tribal Censuses: How Native Nations are Counting Citizens and Communities” project seeks to collect general knowledge and best practices about conducting comprehensive tribal surveys.

For more information about the project complete the Tribal Censuses Project form, or contact Stephanie Carroll Rainie, NNI’s associate director, at scrainie@email.arizona.eduor 520.626.2969 or Desi Rodriguez-Lonebear, Graduate Research Associate, at desisrl@email.arizona.edu.
